Welcome to Australia

Contrary to popular belief, Australia is not populated by people in tan safari outfits wrangling large reptiles with an air of swagger and witty repartee.  At least not in Sydney, I haven’t been to the outback yet.  But in Sydney, it really is a city of the world, it’s inhabited by people from all over.  Asia has a predominant influence on the city in general, but we’re near Chinatown so our neighborhood is even more so and quite diverse overall (especially Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Middle Eastern).  Many of the restaurants and stores, including grocery stores, have Chinese signs and products.  Many Japanese, Korean and Thai restaurants in the area also.  Looks like restaurant choices tend to be Asian or pubs and clubs, so hopefully we’ll be able to identify some places to bring the kids, though I am eager to get them finally eating something other than American Kiddy Cuisine.  Communication can sometimes be strained, but you muddle through with simple English and hand signals.  Everyone is good-natured about it; who doesn’t like a game of charades?

Best discovery so far:

Sydney is good hair country!  Not sure if it’s the water or the air but let’s just say it’s the opposite of Hamptons Hair – i.e., I have had a perfect hair day every day thus far.  Friends and family have expressed concern that I would ever want to move here permanently, to which I have always scoffed and said I can’t imagine there would be anything great enough to lure me away from my friends and family and all that America has to offer, but hmmm…….
