Playdate in Killara
Playdate today on the North Shore with mom and her five kids. They had 7 and 9 year old boys, a 5 year old girl, 4 year old boy, and 1 year old girl, someone for everyone! The mom was incredibly hospitable and easy going; she fed us and let us lounge around all day and then drove us to the train station afterward. It was an inspiration watching her manage all of those kids singlehandedly. In the morning she’d been to exercise class while her kids played in the kids’ room at her gym, then she came home and baked some scones with home made whipped cream and jelly for a mid-morning snack for us. Granted she had a sprawling house with a gigantic play room, a trampoline, playground equipment, tennis court, pool, and Julia’s favorite, a chicken coop with five egg-laying chickens, so the kids needed little adult supervision to entertain themselves. Still, if I manage to exercise and bake all in the same day, I'm about ready for a nap.

The tramp alone provided hours of fun for everyone.
They have a very nice big brother to put up with these two!
Lady Gaga comes to town
As we emerged from the Town Hall metro station on the way home Julia says, “Mommy it’s Lady Gaga!” At 3 & 5 my kids are already much more aware of Lady Gaga’s image and songs (and many other pop singers for that matter) than ol’ mom is. She was right, the crowd gathered at Town Hall was there to see LG herself. There was a big poster of her with two thrones placed in front of it expectantly, a crowd, and a bunch of police, security, photographers and TV stations. A video team and anchorwoman approached us.
“Hello!” the gorgeous blonde anchor cooed, “Would you guys talk to us?”
“Why don’t you talk to her,” I said pointing to Julia, “She likes Lady Gaga…”
The anchor crouched down and put the big microphone up to her while the lights were turned on and the cameraman focused in.
Anchorwoman: So, do you like Lady Gaga?
Julia: Yeah.
AW: What do you like about her?
Julia: Ummmm, I dunno….
AW: Well, let me see, do ya like her singing?
Julia: Umm, yeah… (with her knuckles in her mouth while she’s talking)
AW: What are your favorite songs of hers?
Julia: Ummm, I can’t bemember… (now she’s pulling her lower lip down as she talks)
Julia: Ummm, I can’t bemember… (now she’s pulling her lower lip down as she talks)
AW: Is there a song you want to sing for us maybe?
Julia: Um, I don’t really bemember… (more knuckles, lip pulling)
AW: Maybe your mum knows what songs you like to sing? she says, looking hopefully up to me, but mum is unfortunately not much help.
After another painful minute or so of this they wrap it up.
As we walk away Julia says excitedly to me, “Mom, that was the first time I was on TV!”
I didn’t have the heart to tell her that she was not too likely to make the news that night…
And of course she sang Lady Gaga songs all the way home.
